Hi Simon,

Was this for promoters you had agreed a guarantee with or are you saying “we’d like 50 quid and a rider”?

okey dokey – I have to warn you I very much doubt you’d get £50 this gig simply cos it’s such a small venue.

I’m also thinking of adding another local band to the bill (first on) to try and boost the punter count.

I always make sure bands get something if we have covered costs. For instance last night at my gig we had a really low attendance. We took £60.50 on the door and after I paid my doorman £20 it left £40.50 for the bands.

This was split £15/£15/£10 with a mighty 50p left for me (but I DJed at a club later which got me £35 which more than made up for it). I very rarely make money for myself on the night so if you guys end up with £20 or £30 just remember I’ve probably gone home with nothing – or a loss if you count my drinks for the night! I haven’t quite got the hang of this making money from promoting lark!

I will send an email out to everyone this week about gig once I have sorted out a local band for the opening slot.

cheerio

okey dokey. Also, do you have a press photo you could send me? I have broadband so don’t worry about the size of it. The local music newspaper (nightshift) are always trying to get me main previews (which must include photos) so it might be handy.

“Turncoat are a band who know how to make an entrance. Unassuming and refreshingly unpretentious – there isn’t a scarf in sight – they announce their presence with building guitars and soaring keyboards. The lead singer’s fresh-faced boyish good looks belie the belting sincerity that’s quickly released as they launch into an impressive set list.

Turncoat’s songs are so far from formulaic that they’re almost disorientating. Gone is any semblance of the usual verse/chorus format, yet it’s impossible not to find your toe tapping. The lyrics are repetitive at times, but it doesn’t seem to matter as the music commands your attention gloriously – perhaps best demonstrated in the track ‘Hang On’. Lead singer Adrian Imms’ voice is clear, articulate, and stretches confidently over several octaves.

Rising and falling, the songs incorporate everything – from stonking guitar riffs to beautiful keyboard interludes – with variations reminiscent of Muse in places. Between songs, the band are mild mannered and somewhat self-deprecating. Obviously keen to be taken seriously, they let the music speak for itself. Even the mellow Monday night crowd couldn’t refrain sedately moshing along with the floppy-haired keyboard player. Turncoat’s spiky and exuberant style is clearly infectious.

Following the heartfelt applause at the end of a polished and dramatic set, the imminent success of this Brighton-based band was predicted by speed of the CDs being snapped up.”

howdy chaz/simon

jon’s been having a real time of it getting the record away at radio, but with the turn-ons bit from nme last week, and the possibility of further coverage of glasto this week, it would really help if you could get some of the more committed fans to start logging onto the forums on bbc.co.uk (specifically zane’s area) and xfm music response, and request the single.

it would be good if people were to say they’d seen the band at glasto, then at some local gig in their area, and have seen the video and heard the track online. we need absolutely any extra pressure we can exert to get the producers of these shows to revisit the track.

given the spare time element this week, this would definitely be a good thing to rope people into.

i’ve also started prodding some of the moderators on some of our other band’s forums to see if they can start getting the track out via gmail to other forum users….it’s normally a really good way of building grass-roots support.

Review: At A Window

“Given the state of Royal Mail, it’s unlikely that four horsemen popped this single through the DiS letterbox. Shame, because the apocalyptic coda of ‘At A Window’ manages to make War Of The Worlds look like Mary Poppins. Cor blimey, it’s loike the end of the world me old china.

Containing enough grit throughout to cover an iced-over M25, it is when Turncoat morph from their dark, Interpol moodiness to a dark, 65 Days moodiness that they really earn their salt and melt our hearts. This is all despite some unbelievably jarring lines. Example? “I’m wanna find my way outside, and think about her beautiful eyes and lips and hair.” The writer of ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees And Toes’ must be spinning in his grave at the cheek of it. If indeed he is actually dead. Either way: he’s pissed off.

Not that the rest of us should be at all annoyed, as although this record still doesn’t quite recreate the band’s onstage passion, this is something of a gem and b-side ‘Absolute Zero’ shows the strength of songs the Brighton five-piece posses. “This is unbelievable”, they constantly sing. Not quite yet, but the end product is nigh.”

Disorder Interview

Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 13:31:54 +0100

Hi Adrian

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner – just been bouncing emails back and forth with Disorder.

Basically – the interview is at 19:00 somewhere near Victoria on August 22nd. I will scout for a suitable location to do it in. The editor, Taylor is going to interview you, she’s really cool, really friendly and really knows her stuff.

We need to get the rest of the band up too for a photo shoot at the same time – but they won’t be interviewed.

The shoot will take place after your interview – in a suitable location – so we need to make sure every one is looking tip-top.

Keep your eyes peeled for a copy of Disorder – it’s quite style orientated so we want to make sure you look HOT!

I’ll try and give you a call over the weekend.

Let me know if this is all good.

Good luck with the shoot with Hannah.

Best, jim

Hi Adrian,

Can you get to the station for 17:49? Where do you work?

There’s a train then that will get you to Victoria at 18:40….

hi jim

i work in hollingbury. to be at the station in 19 minutes is a bit tight.

i would have to drive to the station. i am actually thinking of driving to london with the rest of the band as a tank of petrol at £30 split 5 ways is alot cheaper than paying £15-20 each on a return.

but again this will mean getting to london from brighton in 1 and a half hours.

i will talk to band about it.

let me know your thoughts.

Hi Adrian,

I’ve moved the interview to 19:30 this monday to allow you a bit more time to get to Victoria – is that OK?

We need to have a quick chat at some point over the weekend about the interview. As you know there’s a photo shoot as well so we need to make sure everyone’s looking their best. Basically, try and all wear similar outfits, dark colours are good. And no leather please.

Let’s chat about if over the weekend. Can I call you friday? After 5? I’ve got your number…..

For now just make sure everyone knows what’s going on…. speak to you soon.

Blimey, it’s hot in here…..

Best, jim

Ejector Seat Volume 1: The Theme is Music
Ejector Seat Volume 1: The Theme is Music

“Ejector Seat’s seventeen-track compilation, marking the first birthday of the eponymous Southampton music promoter, is definitely a diverse catch. It is a showcase of the best bands to have played their live nights over the past twelve months. On the basis that I may only be able to hold your attention for another minute, at best, I’ve decided to concentrate my efforts on the more intriguing bits. So sit back, relax and discover what ‘The Theme is Music’ has in store…

The first track, and first mention, goes to the electro-rock sounds of Turncoat’s ‘Heads Above Water’, which blasts its through a spikey and disjointed series of riffs and hooks that sit half way between Muse and Franz Ferdinand. This band create a heavily built up landscape of sounds and force you live in it (for a few minutes at least). “

Hi everyone,

we all love the travelodge….but the pleasure don’t come for free!

it equals £368 actaully… thats about £61.33 each.. but for simplicity i’ll make it £60 each and dip into the “red tin”. thats abut 12quid a night each which isn’t too shabby.

i believe the van is costing us approx £30 for the week. (can you confirm this si?) so we each need to put by £90 + food and beer money.

so can we all start putting by some cash by in time for the tour at the end of oct.
thank you.

hi all

just to let you know i have £50 towards the van from luton hoo gig[this is a fee and much better than the £4.50 we were expecting from sales of cds] it was sent in a cheque and i’ve paid into my account, so i’ll take it with me to hire van cost with xtra driver ins = £206, less this £50 = £26 EACH for the van for a week

not too bad

so that’s £60 for tlodge each
             £26 for the van
minimum costs total = £86 EACH

by the way do you all want to do this hawk and hacksaw support see dom for details it’s 19 nov i think again ask dom at hanbury very different styles musically and venue has a noise limiter, but it’s also a good opportunity to play with one of the neutral milk chaps
